A Test of Faith

Reading Time: 2 minutes

James1:2-4 Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. 3 For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. 4 So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

The pavement was fresh from recent construction. As I hugged the tight 90 degree corner, the sharp steel cap of the drainage ditch scraped my back tire just right. My daughter jumped with the ‘BANG’ as her side of the car instantly felt lower than the rest.

I chuckled quietly to the Lord, thankful my husband happened to be in town. My two girls with me, we pulled over into the nearest parking lot, a car full of groceries. Having no clue how to change a flat, assistance soon arrived and fixed it in no time.

Thankfully we made it back to the house, going 10 under the limit, to drop the girls and the groceries.

Personally, I thought this hic-up was hilarious. It was so unexpected, I knew it was somehow part of God’s wonderful plan. So I went along with it.

What a great opportunity to fully rely on the Lord, as the little dicky tire quivered the entire way to the shop.

The attendant couldn’t help but notice the joy behind my large smile, despite the circumstance. He asked me the reason for my joy. My response, “God is good, ALL the time”. His smile indicated the encouragement he received, a boost of kingdom energy mid-day.

The flat tire was only a mild inconvenience. The Lord provided, working everything out tremendously. Obviously, I was happy about that. The joy I had through the trial though, that was all from Him.

That’s not to say I always respond in an ideal manner. If only I could be that trusting during more serious predicaments; daily discouragement, a missed trip, a new diagnosis, loss of a job or loved one. We can though, for all things are possible through Christ who strengthens us. (Philippians 4:13)

Thank-You, Lord, for the ways You test and purify my faith, for by this you perfect it. Whatever I’m facing, Jesus, give me peace and rest in Your strong arms. I can experience joy in the midst, for You are in control. Grow my faith till I fully rely on You. ~Amen

1 Peter 4:12-13 Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.
