Seek Him for Yourself

1Thessalonians 5:16-18 Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

I love this popular portion of scripture. It’s so valuable in our walk with the Lord.

It’s all about relationship with Him.

My husband and I have an interesting dating story. We never officially dated before our engagement. It was a best friends first thing.

Small town boy from Wisconsin meets Aussie girl while both on exchange in Finland. Ya, a love story only the Lord could write. All our friends knew we were crazy for one another. Yet, we felt it impractical to date, knowing the ocean would soon separate us again. So we never made it official. Our love for each other ran deeper than to break each others hearts.

Young love so sweet… We rode our bikes in the snow to school together each morning. We correlated most of our subjects, and ate lunch together. Inseparable, we played billiards, indoor tennis, or ice-skating each day after school and weekends. The year was 1999. Texting on our Nokia’s was such a treat to gain instant access and locate him each day.

He was always on my mind and in my heart. Any moment I wasn’t with him, I had the urge to be by his side. In those few short months, we really got to know each other.

So how do we get to know God?

Simple — spend time with Him!

He’s so awesome, who wouldn’t want to spend time with Him?… if they knew Him. We can and do get to know Him, by His word, and connecting with Him in prayer. Hanging out with other followers of Jesus is also a great way. I love hearing how He’s moving in others lives. It’s very encouraging!

I’m so thankful my hubby loves the Lord also! He doesn’t feel crowded out by my spending time with Jesus.

From the moment we met, I couldn’t get enough of my husband’s smile. Our heavenly Father’s face shines down upon us. (Numbers 6:25) He sings over us! (Zephaniah 3:17) I just want to bask in that! The Lord betrothed Himself to us. His passion for us, He showed on the cross. His proposal ring we adorn is the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Ephesians 5:25-27, Galatians 1:4, 2 Corinthians 1:22)

How well do you know God? Does His Word fill your thoughts? Can you finish His sentences? Do you know His heart or what He wants?

Today’s passage in scripture is a great start. We have reason to rejoice in Him, spend time with Him, and give thanks — knowing His powerful loving hand is able to hold us up in victory against sin and death. (Romans 14:4)

Praise Your Great Name, Jesus, King of Kings, our Heavenly Father! Lord give me the burning desire to spend every waking moment in Your presence. You inhabit the praises of Your people. Your Holy Spirit abides in me. Be magnified, Oh Lord. Let my heart and lips praise You continually. ~Amen
