Proverbs 16:9 In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.
Vaguely remembering which highway to take, I followed a friend to a place we’d never been before. Our turn seemed to be coming up, but my friend didn’t put her blinker on. Oh, this was huge. We could go miles off track if we take the wrong highway, by the time we both realize. We didn’t have much wiggle room before our appointment. During that 1/4 mile before the exit, I had a split decision to make. Would I go what I thought was ’the right way’ and leave them to their path? Or would I stick with them?
“Oh Lord, what should I do?”
I stuck with them, following the Spirit’s lead, and quickly turned on my waze app. Turns out, they were right. I was wrong. The Lord had me stick to my friend out of loyalty over being ‘right’. And it paid off.
The Lord was with us, all the way, that day. Providing gas at just the right time, enough ice and coolers shared between us for our haul. His plan was playing out, for His glory. I’m so glad I didn’t veer off the way.
The ‘old’ me would have taken the ‘right’ path, out of arrogance. Praise God, He’s developed me in amazing ways already. No doubt He taught me that lesson by my failures in times past.
Faithful, is our God!
Today’s verse proves true. We made our plans, and the Lord established our steps, keeping us on the right path.
There’s many turns in life. We may not know which way to go. God and His Word are our authority. His Holy Spirit is our guide, whether in those split second choices, or major life decisions. I love how Jesus summed up all the commandments into two.
Matthew 22:36-40 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
So simple, yet often difficult.
We get to trust Him moving forward, giving every care and concern to Him. (Psalm 55:22, 1 Peter 5:7) I’m really learning to put everything in His hands. He’s even growing me to fight the temptation to snatch it back again! (Proverbs 3:5-8) I can do this knowing His loving-kindness and trusting that He’s in complete control. No longer should we feel we have to manipulate circumstances. We are free to do what’s right, following the Spirit, and He’ll handle everything. That’s where we find His joy and rest!
Imagine the multitude of times the Lord has protected us, by the many our eyes have seen! And the way He’s taught us when our plans fail.
Heavenly Father, enable us to place all our plans into Your hands. Let only the one’s that honor You, by Your Word, stand. You’re with us, establishing and guiding our steps. Thank-you for showing us Your loving kindness in this way. ~Amen.
