It is Written

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Matthew 4:4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'”

Can you picture this scene in Jesus’ life? Right before Jesus’ earthly ministry, the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted. No food or drink for 40 days, His flesh was weak. Yet, with the power of God’s Holy Spirit, Jesus endured temptation. Jesus was tested and proven worthy, displaying He is God in the flesh.

In James 1:4 it says ‘God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;’ Obviously God is immune to temptation. The attempted temptation by the enemy failed accordingly. So why go through this strenuous ordeal?

True to God’s character, Jesus must have done this for our benefit, not just His eternal glory. There’s so much we can learn from this encounter.

Did Jesus resist temptation by relying on Jesus-the-man’s strength? He could have. He’s God. But no, He didn’t. Each test, He stood on the Word of God.
“It is written…(Matthew 4:4, Deut. 8:3)
It is written…(Matthew 4:6, Psalm 91:11,12)
It is written… (Matthew 4:7, Deut. 6:16).”

Pretty ironic seeing Jesus IS the Word of God (John 1:1). Never the less, as the Good Leader and Teacher, He led by example. For Jesus knows it is impossible for us to stand against the schemes of the enemy on our own strength. We must rely on God’s power, (Ephesians 6:10-20). The power of His word, (Hebrews 4:12-13). In the power of His Holy Spirit, reminding us of everything the Lord has said. (John 14:26)

When we pray, it’s common to use 3 powerful words, ‘in Jesus’ name’. We read in, John 13:13-14, when asking anything in Jesus’ name, He hears us. As we enter into God’s word daily, He reveals His heart to us. He teaches us to submit to Him in every way. Let’s also use these 3 other powerful words, “It is written”. Let the Lord help us to pinpoint scripture to target every temptation we face. There we stand upon His powerful Word.

The enemy came back against Jesus with scripture in Matthew 4:7, quoting Deuteronomy 6:16. This shows the enemy knows and can quote scripture. The enemy will use scripture to confuse us, while trying to get us to fall. He tried twisting the word of God for deception, manipulation and personal power’s sake. Let us not take any of God’s word out of context, but understand in context and principal. We must worship in spirit and in truth (John 4:26).

Jesus overcame the enemy, and so can we, in Him!

Holy Father, Your Word is eternal. When this world shakes, Your Word shall remain – unshaken. We stand solely on Your Word. For, by the breath of Your mouth, we receive life. ~Amen

  1. Thank you again Danielle! So often I forget how the enemy knows the scripture and will use it out of context for his own traps against us.

    1. Thank-you Kamie, such an encouragement. I know someone needs God’s grace with this issue assaulting their peace. I’m done with shame, we’re a new creation in Christ Jesus! I can now be thankful God used this inner-torment to draw my heart to Him.
