For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My hubby and kids were so excited when I came in the garage door. They’d spent hours fixing my favorite flourless chocolate cake. The ladies from church and I, went to see the movie, ‘Unplanned’. A true story of Abby Johnson leaving Planned Parenthood.
I couldn’t help but kiss each one of my children’s beautiful head. I could hardly say a word. Here I was, my family celebrating me. Yet, my mind went straight to the thousands of unborn children whose lives were terminated, and are still being terminated in the United States and across the globe today.
Those precious gifts — themselves denied a birthday.
With eyes still red from tears, I fought them from swelling up again. I myself, was adopted. Saved by God’s hand, and a 119yr old antiabortion law that just got overturned in October 2018. Here I am. Alive. Adopted. Grown and Married. And now abortion is legal in the Australian state of Queensland, where I’m from.
Making a sacrifice on the “alter of convenience”, Abby Johnson put it. It’s no secret, the Lord got hold of Abby’s heart, after 8 years of prayers by her parents and loving husband. I didn’t realize the movie was rated ‘R’ before I saw it. Solely for the graphic nature of the onscreen abortions. I nearly threw up during the heart wrenching opening scene. The story was amazing however, and it was so cool to see God’s hand at work in her life. Very emotional and prayer provoking!
One moment hearing the baby’s heart beat on the ultrasound. A familiar sound from my 4 pregnancies. God knitting together a precious life in the ’safety’ of a mothers womb. God’s love is so caring, so intricate, so precise with details, so SOVEREIGN, so mighty, and SO WONDROUS!
The next moment, baby fights for its life as it contorts away from the vacuum catheter. After that painful horror, an empty womb, void of life, hopes and dreams. Equally painful for the women in crisis who were advised to go through with it. Forever stuck with the memory of their unborn baby. The pain and shame that I’m sure follows, would be too much to bear alone. Only a Savior who is willing to take on that burden, can bring refuge from the torment.
Abby warned at the beginning of the movie, hers is not a neat story you could tie up with a “pretty little bow”. This is not something we even want to touch on. It’s uncomfortable. Horrific.
I couldn’t help but be thankful to God for the preciousness of life. Even driving home I had a new found respect for others made in God’s image. I backed up out of my parking spot more carefully. I drove slower, considering people close to the sidewalk.
Today’s verse comes from a place of God’s wisdom. In God’s sovereignty and infinite power and understanding, He forms all people in His image. God carefully knits each one of us together in that secret place of a mothers womb. Can you picture the love, attention and time it took for my husband and daughter to bake my cake? Let alone God ordaining the conception of a life.
Abby described her mournful regret of taking part in thousands of abortions, and the 2 lives of her own unborn children. This left her with torturous shame and guilt, too heavy to bear. Only Jesus was able and willing to take on that burden. Now she stands on ‘the other side of the fence’, just outside the ’safe zone’ of the Planned Parenthood parking lot. Her heart always broke for these women in their moment of need, but couldn’t see past the fog of sin to see truth.
Like Abby, we hurt for these women in a crisis pregnancy, who are councilled to abort. “Fries and Soda” is how top executives explained the abortions needed for profit because the they broke even on the other services. These women walk the fallout from common lies of this fallen world.
This issue goes back to the break down of God’s best for families. Casual sexual relationships are not God’s way. God knows they are damaging to everyone involved! It’s not some tyrannical limitation but a boundary of LOVE.
So what can I do?
2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
One of the most uplifting parts of the movie was God’s hand working through the prayers of those ‘behind the fence’. Praise God. Each Saturday, faithful Christians came to pray for the mothers and their unborn babies outside the ’safe zone’. Their perseverance endured not knowing the impact, through trusting God. Their prayers and kindness helped Abby find refuge when God revealed to her the depth of the sin. From her 8yrs experience, the times Christians stood on the other side of the fence and prayed, there was up to 75% no-show for abortions that day! Now, that facility and others have shut down.
40 Days for Life is hosting prayer opportunity in communities. The 40 day prayer to end abortion is going on now! Check the website for updates and to sign up.
Dear Heavenly Father, wondrous are Your works! How great is the fullness of Your loving kindness! Our land is stained with the innocent blood of babies. You hear their cry. Here ours. We pray for eyes to open to the truth. We pray that You make abortion illegal across the entire earth which You created. Yours is blood stronger than death, love deeper than the grave. We pray for broken hearts to turn to You for forgiveness and healing. ~Amen.

Grace and Truth is such a delicate balance.
