What’s in a name?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

John 14:15 “If you love me, keep my commands. (NIV)

Just weeks away from our planned drive up to a Christian writers conference, I received a notification of more early bird classes becoming available. These last minute classes looked so good. Yet, I couldn’t put my name down in case we didn’t arrive on time.

Was I considering others by not reserving a limited spot? Was it my stingy core avoiding to pay incase I missed it? Or was it pride, knowing I may not be able to follow through? I’d like to think it was wisdom coming from Matthew 5:37; Just say a simple, ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No, I won’t.’ … (NLT)

We feel pressure stemming from obedience to things we put our name/image to. However, when it comes to Godliness, do we often settle for less?

Lets consider – we bear the name of Christ. Wow, the pressure’s on!

For years during my adolescence, I couldn’t tell the Lord that I love Him. By divine wisdom, I knew actions show what’s in the heart. I also knew by proclaiming love, I’d be accountable for loveless deeds.

Before panic arises over which command we’ve broken lately, let’s review the words of Jesus.
Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment.39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

Forget striving by our own strength, for we will quickly wear ourselves out. Let’s bask in the Father’s great love. We bare His name, for we are His precious possession. It is not that we have attained perfection, but that we are His to perfect.

As the truth of His perfect love fills us, His love will overflow through us. Remember – We love him, because he first loved us (1John4:19, KJV). Keeping His commands is the natural response to knowing Him.

Lord, thank-you for loving us perfecting. Show me Your love personally each day. I seek You, Jesus. Reveal Yourself to me that I may keep Your commands and love like You. ~ Amen
