James 1:21 So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.
When I was a child my parents owned a farm we’d visit on the weekends. One hot summer’s day, the cattle just finished churning up the watering hole. I put on my swimsuit and took a mud bath. It was fun to actually paint myself neck to foot in black mud! Eww is right!
Isn’t that the same with our old self before knowing Christ?
The mud started tightening as it dried and cracked in the hot sun. I decided to head back to the house. My mum wasn’t sure whether to scold me or laugh. She made me hose off outside. The giant mess I got into washed right off. It wasn’t apart of me.
Today’s key verse reminds us of who we are in Christ. This complete mind shift is so encouraging to me. Our old ways and habits are not part of us like the mud that covered me. We are clothed in Christ and all of His goodness. We get to throw it off like a dirty old t-shirt. We are a new creation, in Christ, the old has gone the new has come. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Sounds easier said than done? That’s the thing, it’s Christ’s work in us (Philippians 2:13). We just have to be a willing participant, and we are by the the Spirit dwelling in us.
Water washed off the mud so fast. It would have taken me ages to scratch off all that mud by my own strength. Jesus is the living water and our strength.
That doesn’t mean I stopped getting muddy occasionally on accident. Now as an adult, I would scarcely attempt another full mud bath. As mature Christians, we know better, and the cool mud seems less tempting.
Lets be encouraged by the second part of todays verse. – “and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.”
God saves by His word. So lets swim in the chrystal clear waters of His word till we soak it all up!
Dear Jesus, thank-you for washing me whiter than snow. When sin creeps in, cleanse me. Help me to cast dirty habits aside. Remind me daily to cling to the word which You planted in my heart. You have the power to save. ~Amen
