Romans 10:13 For “Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.” (NLT)
I was excited for a new year. Looking down the class list of names, they meant nothing until I recognized some of them. I knew the faces and the personalities behind those familiar names. What is a name, if there’s no meaning behind it? If there’s no personal connection and knowledge of the person who bears that name, it means nothing to us. We have to know someone in order for their name to have meaning to us.
‘The name of the LORD’ denotes God’s character – who He is. Creator. Savior. Deliverer. The God who sees our plight, and hears our cries. Our God is our All in All. He’s the self-existing One. He is our refuge and our help. God knows us fully, for He is God. However just as we get to know others, the more time we spend with God, the deeper our knowing Him becomes. Often it takes hard times, and heartache to draw us to discover God more fully.
So, how we know God determines how we call upon Him. According to our needs, He reveals Himself to be the answer to all of them. Calling out to God takes faith. (Hebrews 11:1-6) Our faith is then solidified in relational experience with Him. (Exodus 14:31)
We see throughout the old Testament God-fearing people calling upon the name of the LORD. Genesis 4:26 “… At that time people began to call on the name of the LORD.” Abraham (Genesis 12:8), Isaac (Genesis 26:25), Jacob (Genesis 32:24-30), Moses (Exodus 3:2-17, 34:5) This was before salvation through Christ was revealed. God showed His character as the One who saves. (Genesis 14:20, Exodus 6:7, Judges 8:34Daniel 3:28, Psalm 118:14, Isaiah 12:2, Ezekiel 36:29, Job 36:15, Psalm 65:5, Psalm 56:13) God gave prophesy to His people to bring hope to the world. (Isaiah 49:6, Acts 13:47)
Isn’t it just remarkable that our God is knowable. He reveals Himself to His creation — to us, made in His image out of the dust He created. (Genesis 1:1, Genesis 1:26-27, Genesis 2:7) I am in awe that our God invites us to know Him. He made Himself known to me, though I’m completely undeserving. He is so personal to each of us to whom He makes Himself known. Jesus also invites, “Seek and you shall find” (Matthew 7:7). And here, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.” (Psalm 95:7-8, Hebrews 3:15)
He made Himself known to the people of the Old Testament by walking with them, appearing to them and talking to them. (Genesis 3:8, Genesis 5:24, Genesis 6:9-13, Genesis 32:24-30) Not to mention the many miracles God did, and the mighty hand God showed in delivering His people over and over again. From slavery in egypt, from their enemies, from exile.
To us He makes Himself known by His Word and by His Spirit who confirms His Word, and through believers who have His Holy Spirit. (John 6:63-70) He’s always in agreement to His Word, for He cannot lie. (Numbers 23:19, Titus 1:2) Miracles still happen today. God answers our prayers so often, deepening our trust in Him. (Mark 9:23-25) No doubt He also uses dreams and visions of Jesus in places where His gospel doesn’t frequent.
Acts 2:38-39 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every on of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off — for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
Praise God He used His beautiful creation, ‘the gift of desperation’, and other believers to point me to Him. His Name is famous throughout the earth by the message of the good news of Jesus. I’m so thankful for God leaving His word, full of Spirit and life so we can know Him more. (John 6:63) Most importantly, He gives the Holy Spirit who testifies of the need to call upon the name of the LORD. (John 16:8-11)
Praise God for His promise in today’s verse; Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved! There’s so much meaning packed into God’s mighty name!
Praise God. Your Name, LORD, endures forever, Your renown through all generations. Thank-you for making Yourself known to me as my personal Savior, Deliverer, Refuge and Strength. I call upon Your great and mighty Name, now and forever ~Amen
