Jesus, Bring the Rain

Acts 2:17 In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.

My hubby laughs at the fact — whenever he goes away it usually rains. He loves rainy weather. Sure enough waking up the first day of him gone, the rain settled in.

When he’s away, it gives me an opportunity for alone time with the Lord. I just love how the flashes of lightning and rolling thunder tell of the magisty and power of our God. I marveled at the scene set by the Lord. There were many spiritual maintenance issues in need of repair as usual.

The rain seems fitting, a blessing to bolster growth. Just as He pours out the rain, He pours out His Spirit. Both a free gift of grace.

Today’s verse speaks specifically of a certain time predicted in Joel 2:28. The fulfillment – After Jesus rose and ascended back to Heaven, He sent His Spirit on the day of Pentecost. We can read about the start of this astounding account in Acts 2.

In the Old Testament we read about an amazing man of God, Elijah, one of only two who didn’t die. God took him up to heaven in a flaming chariot with horses. (2 Kings 2:3-9). His spiritual apprentice Elisha took not of Elijah’s ways. He asked Elijah for a double portion of his spirit and to become his successor. Of course we know now that was the Holy Spirit, given by God. Culturally those days when a father died he gave a ‘double portion’ of his possessions to his oldest son. While the others got a single portion, divided equally between the rest of the sons.

The amazing thing is, we live in the ‘last days’ ever since Jesus sat back down at the right hand of God. (Hebrews 10:12). Today the Lord gives us His Holy Spirit according to the riches of His grace when we first believed in surrender. (Ephesians 1:7, Ephesians 2:8-9)

Romans 8:11 The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.

As the rain washes and cleanses the earth, so too His daily grace cleanses our soul. He washes away the impurities that mar our relationship with Him. He will never leave nor forsake us. Let’s walk in the presence of His Spirit today and always.

As we seek His face, He definitely responds with favor, growing us to be more like Him. (2 Corinthians 3:18)

What areas of your life do you need God to pour out His Spirit?

Lord, where I am lacking, You fill me to overflowing! Your grace abounds in Your life-giving Spirit. May all the saints grow in grace and knowledge of You, God. ~Amen
